On page SEO- Important Techniques and Tips

In this article I am going to discuss important Techniques and Tips about on page SEO.

Search Engine Optimization can be categorized into on page SEO & off page SEO.

On page SEO refers to how we create & maintain our website pages for optimizing them for better rankings in search engines. We have to optimize all the pages on our website using on page SEO techniques & tips that I am going to discuss in this article.

The on Page optimization can be categorized into website level optimization and Post level optimization.

Website Level Optimization:

When we say site level optimization these included factors that are relevant generally at website level. Essentially, website level SEO factors are structural factors.

URL Structure of Your website:

URL structure refers to how your URL is appearing in your browser’s address bar or search engine result pages. We can have two types of URL structures as follows:

Static URLs:

These are the URLs which are created using your post titles. For example, http://www.yoursite.com/your-post-title

Static URLs are considered more users friendly because the users can get an exact idea about the page content simply by looking at the URL. So static URLs get more click through rate in search engine results.

Dynamic URLs:

Dynamic URLs are query generated. If the website is using database to store the contents then the URLs have session ids, query strings & different parameters. A dynamic URL looks like for example http://www.yoursite.com/articledetail.php?artid=336021&catid=88&

So for humans it becomes very difficult to understand the inside contents of the page contained in the URL.

It’s a popular misconception that Search Engines could not read the dynamic URL. As per the Official Google Webmaster Central Blog, Google Bots can read any type of dynamic URLs & only advantage a static URL gets is the higher click through ratein search results.

Post Level Optimization:

These are the factors that contribute to on page SEO at micro level & are present on each of your posts. Whenever you decide to add new contents to your website or blog, you can follow the guidelines discussed below.

  1. Use keyword research tool:

Before you start writing your post, make sure that you do some keyword research using free keyword tools like Google Adwords Keyword tool. Here you would find the relevant keywords that you can use in your post or article.

2. Deciding Title of Your Post:

The length of your post title should be ideally between 3 to 6 words. This will help you to keep your Post URL to be short & crisp. Short URLs attract more click through rate in search engine results. Also your title should be catchy & should grab the attention of the users. The most important thing is to include your main keyword in the title of your article. Some people believe that the keyword should be used at the beginning of the Title. But I recommend not stretching the Title to include the keyword at the beginning of the title if it’s resulting into spoiling the tone of your post title. If it’s possible to include the keyword at the beginning of the title without hampering the catchiness of the post title then you can do it.

3. Use of HTML Heading Tags:

You should use different headings html tags in your post body. You should include <h1>, <h2>, <h3> tags in your post body part. Google spiders usually pay more attention these heading tags when they crawl through your website contents. You should use your main keyword in all the heading tags.

4. Create semantically relevant contents:

Google has developed their algorithm to find out if your website content really has relevant contents. For that they use data from millions of website to find out the various related keywords these websites are using in their contents. So suppose your website is reviewing different car models then logically to really have good information about cars your website should have words like Ford, Nissan, Audi, Skoda, Ferrari, Mercedes & so on. These are the keywords which are closely related to your main keyword. So your article should have these relevant keywords.

5. Include useful media in your Posts

It’s always recommended to include useful videos, images or infographics in your posts. This increases user engagement on your website. Google use the user behavior data to find out the usefulness of your website. Always use Alt tags for images.

6. Keyword Placement in Posts

Always include your keyword in the first & last sentence of your post apart from using them in different headings tags.

7. Keyword Formatting

In your article body always use formatting like Bold, Italics & underline using your keyword. Although this is not the only important factor, it counts for deciding your pagerank. Google uses these formatting commands to give more weight to the words using this formatting. So you should have your keyword Bold, underlined & italicized in your article body.

8. Internal & External Links

You should provide links to your already published contents to increase the usefulness of your contents by making it readily available for readers. Google weighs this to a great extent & considers your content to be useful to the users of your website. Similarly, you should link to external useful authority sources wherever possible as you would be sharing useful contents with your audience. Making your website really useful to the users is the factor which has highest weight in Google algorithm. Hence you should start using this immediately.

9. Keyword Density

The keyword density refers to the number of times you have used your keyword in your post. You should use the keyword naturally & should not over use them. Keyword stuffing would attract a penalty from the search engines. So you should maintain a natural keyword frequency & should not use the keywords excessively.

10. Create contents in detail & with great analysis

Google recently introduced Penguin 2.0 update to its Algorithm which is also called as web spam algorithm. Penguin 2.0 gives more value to the content having in depth analysis as against the content which has a very cursory analysis. So creating in depth content would help you to get your post ranked higher in search engines.

11. Block Level Optimization

Google uses block level analysis to analyze the website contents. Block level analysis analyze your website block by block in different parts rather than analyzing your website entirely.  This factor applies to both site level and post level optimization. Your website has different blocks as shown in image below. You have to make sure that you are optimizing these blocks to attain a good ranking in search engines.

12. Use external links wisely

You can include as many links to external websites. You should share the useful resources with your readers. However, make sure that you are adding rel=nofollow tag while linking to other websites. While linking to authority website you can omit the rel=nofollow tag so that Google may consider your links to the authority websites & could upheld the usefulness of your contents. Hence you should always include a nofollow tag while linking to non authority websites to avoid passing the pagerank link juice to these non authority websites.

To summarize, we have seen that Onpage SEO  is a comprehensive concept which consists of site wide factors as well as post level factors. We should do our best to make our website content user friendly & at the same time we should optimize the contents for search engines.
